I guess that this one bugs me because for the first time ever i feel that clock ticking (annoyingly because of friends and them saying "i wouldn't have a baby past 35")...anyway, made me wonder what birthdays other people dreaded or do dread? curious what other folks reasons were.

My boyfriend worked as a mechanic for a couple decades, and as such he's pretty much Seen It All--you know, the electric tape over that pesky oil light, the music up loud to drown out that funny noise...but this one really stood out.

Scenario: customer walks into a parts store and requests something simple....say, spark plug wires. And this dialogue follows:

Clerk: What kind of car is it?
Customer: A fodo. (The r-dropping makes it worse somehow--I swear I thought it was some exotic European make I'd never heard of before.)
Clerk: Yeeesss...but what KIND of four-door is it?
Customer: It a V8.

And the worst part is, he says that not only did this happen REGULARLY, but about three times out of five the next information they would come out with was the color of the paint.

Because the fact that your car has four doors will really narrow down the specific parts you need. O.o

I'm a senior in high school and the things I hear from the mouths of my peers are simply stunning. I just want to either bang my head against the wall or burst into tears on a daily basis.

In the beginning of the semester, a student asked, "Do we have a prime minister?" (We are in the US. This should not be a question you need to ask as a 17/18 year old.)

Yesterday a student asked if women could run for president. I go to an all-girls school and we just finished watching a movie about the women's rights movement. Not to mention, where has she been for the last couple of years? A woman just did run for president, idiot.

I genuinely fear for the future. There are some relatively intelligent and informed students in the class and the school as a whole. But the rest...I just do not understand how they will ever survive in life. D: Even more insanely stupid things happen quite often. I could fill a journal.

dairy products allergy

I recently found out, after numerous doctor visits and unnecessary tests, that I am probably allergic to dairy products.

I can't have milk, whey, lactose, lactic acid (from milk), casein, and caseinate.
I CAN have meat, eggs, and anything else.

What are your dairy-free secrets? Where can I find cheap dairy free bread? What's the best kind of soy cheese? What should I watch out for with secret dairy ingredients? Where can I get some CHOCOLATE?

In a month or so I will start adding things like goat cheese, aged cheese, cooked dairy, etc to see if I have an intolerance to those things, but for now I need to be CRAZY about it and avoid everything so I can start to feel better.

PS> Did you know there is lactose in stout beers? Did you know that there is dairy products in caramel coloring? This is insane.

I posted about this in my journal... but I felt like posting here... Just to share... I don't know why. I'm going tonight, to a dinner organised by the publisher I work for as a childrens book illustrator...

When they called to ask if I'd participate or not to the dinner they organise, I first thought the publishing coordinator who's about my age, would be there so that even if I don't know / get to talk anyone else, there would be her to talk to. She's a nice woman who makes me feel ok and I have an easy communication with her. Then...  I learned she's not working there anymore.

So full of questions LOL ... I'll be going... but I'm EXTREMELY afraid of speding a very boring night with people who won't talk to me and so on.

I don't even exactly know if we're "invited", or if everyone will pay his her share. And I don't know how to manage to get to understand that without being silly.

I'm out of the door in half an hour wish me luck LOL

Hi!  I'm Kristen, am 30 yr. old, and highly suspect I may have Asperger's.  When I was 10, my grandmother took me to a psychiatrist and he said that I had an unspecified learning disability, was EXTREMELY shy, and was behind developmentally (I was more like a 7 yr. old than a 10 yr. old).  I didn't get to see my grandmother for more than a few times a year, so never went back, and my parents never cared to bother with it.  But I've spent the past couple of years searching for what's wrong with me and even considered bi-polar for the emotional swings, until I started reading about Asperger's.  And, boy, do I have a lot of the symptoms:

1. Face-blind: Thank god it's not just me.  I didn't even recognize my own sister once.
2. Poor memory: Memories of my childhood-and of yesterday-are very spotty.
3. Poor motor skills: I am so clumsy and uncoordinated.  You should see me try to sweep a floor.
4. Poor social skills: I spent my childhood made fun of, no matter that I went to over 40 schools by the time I was 15 (no, my parents were not in the military).
5. Eye contact: I find it very hard to look at people's faces and a lot of the times find myself looking in completely the opposite direction, 'cause I can't bear to look at them.
6. I'm terrible at taking care of myself as an adult and have just moved away from home, with a friend as a roommate.
There's other, smaller things, but these are, I think, the worst.

I want to go to a doctor for confirmation, but should I just pick a psychiatrist/psychologist from the phone book and ask about it or is there something specific I should do or look for?  The confirmation is mainly because people tend to brush me off when I say I have a bad memory or act as if I can just get over shyness with a snap of my fingers-I just have this gut feeling that it's something more.

And one question which bothers me: I hate being touched and especially hate touching other people.  Is this a symptom, too, or is it just me?  I realize that it could be because of a couple of, um, incidents in my childhood but I don't know...

Thank you.

BSG Fanfiction Readers & Writers Poll

Nov. 7th, 2009 | 08:05 am
posted by: [info]zinke in [info]battlestar_blog

Recently several members of the BSG fandom noticed that fanfiction writers were not posting as many stories as they once had and, being the inquisitive people that they were, they began to discuss why this might be.

This discussion proved intriguing enough to prompt a couple of us to create a pair of polls exploring the complex relationship between fanfiction writers and readers as a means of getting to the bottom of this particular fandom mystery.

So if you are a reader or writer of Battlestar Galactica fanfiction, please head on over to our new community [info]fandompollgeek and complete the appropriate poll (poll for writers; poll for readers). If you are both a reader and a writer, go ahead and complete both polls. Once we have our results we’ll post them to the community for everyone to review and discuss.

And if you, like us, are intent on solving the mysteries of the fannish universe via the most objective means LJ has to offer, or just happen to have an unnatural obsession with ticky-boxes and/or pie charts, please feel free to join the [info]fandompollgeek community; after all, there are undoubtedly other fannish – or ficish – questions out there and it is our goal to answer them– preferably through the use of spreadsheets, bar graphs and pretty multi-colored pie charts.

But first, go and answer our writers and readers polls!

BSG Action figures

posted by: [info]meshel73 in [info]battlestar_blog

In July 2008 I pre-ordered the 4 pack Series 4 BSG Figures that I thought was going to be Adama, Laura, Lee and Admiral Cain. Yesterday I received an email from BigBadToystore to say ..... "We have learned that the Battlestar Galactica Series 4 assortment has been changed to a set of three, removing the two President figures and replacing them with Dr. Baltar".

They put a moustache on Adama and put Baltar's head on the body they were going to use for Lee.

Old Version

New Version

EDIT: Found this on the Art Asylum blog ....
Q. Please release Adama Sr. & President Roslin. They were, respectively, the heart and soul of the series and the collection is incomplete without them. Any other figures we get will be very welcome frosting, but these two are necessary, so how about a two pack?
A. We did consider a two pack exactly like that for sometime but the thinking was it would not be exciting to anyone but completists. So we've rolled Baltar and Adama and hopefully Roslin will not be far behind.

Final Reminder for Bookshops

Nov. 6th, 2009 | 10:37 pm
posted by: [info]officialgaiman

posted by Neil
A quick reminder (as I was just asked) that today is the day that the bookshop Graveyard Book party reports have to be in to Harper Collins. By 9 pm PST.

http://files.harpercollins.com/Mktg/HarperChildrens/PDF/GraveyardContest_rules.pdf are the rules and info for those who lost them.

Hi Mr. Gaiman,

I was disappointed today to read you won't be part of the judging for The Graveyard Book contests. My not-wealthy, middle-of-nowhere bookstore just sent in its entry, and something we're concerned about is the fairness of judging.

For example, independent bookstores like Powell's (I'm sure you know) easily have enough money and are in a convenient enough location to ask you to come at one time or another. Against stores like that, who were able to put more money into their parties, we stand little chance.

I don't think that it's a lost cause for us; we were very creative. I'm just nervous to know you won't be judging. Can you tell me whether you think the judges will take things like size and location of bookstores into account? It would make me sleep a little easier until the results are announced.

Tusen takk,
Allison

Well, per the rules, the judging is based on:

(i) Overall creativity of the Party, as demonstrated by the invitations, signage, decorations, activities, entertainment, and refreshments.
(ii) Customer attendance and response (i.e., enthusiasm, costumes, participation).
(iii) Ability to capture and represent the spirit of The Graveyard Book.

...specifically to reward creativity, and not the ability to outspend other shops. (That was also why the party had to actually be at the bookshop, and not at another location.)

I asked my editor, Elise Howard, and she said,

Gosh, yes. Here's what we think is happening. We are looking at all the entries. On Monday, we'll send you the best 11, from which you will choose the Grand Prize Winner. The rest will get the first-prize package. So the short answer is that you ARE helping to choose.

The longer answer is that we will be very fair and will consider creativity, which includes work done with available resources, along with pure execution. (Don't you think? We haven't done anything yet; still waiting for more entries to come in.)

...which means that

a) I was wrong and will be the ultimate judge, from the shortlist. (Damn.)

and

b) everyone's on a level playing field.

Does that help reassure you?

PS -- Widgett's Graveyard Book Dessert competition winners have been announced over at http://www.needcoffee.com/2009/11/06/graveyard-book-dessert-challenge-winners/.

This one had NOTHING to do with me at all. But lor' the winning desserts look tasty...

I am moving out as quickly as possible after an amicable but painful severance of a six year relationship and in doing so I am realizing that as much as I enjoy all my prom bridesmaid/etc dresses, I don't need them and I don't want to move them.

I would love to donate them (and still might) but unfortunately breakup severely alters my financial situation so I am hoping to sell them. Normally I just take stuff to BuffEx and then they scorn me and I take it to Goodwill, but these are really nice (read: worn once or twice or never) and I don't even know if BuffEx takes that sort of thing.

So, is there consignment in this city that gives cash for fancy dresses. That way someone can at least buy them for a lot less than I paid. :) They are 12-14 in size-ish.

Thankies!
